For many cloth diapering families, supporting WAHM companies and USA companies is extremely important. The Made in the USA series highlights cloth diapering manufacturers that work hard to keep production local and within the USA.

Thirsties was one of the first diaper cover we tried. As the offering has grown to add the Duo line of pockets, fitteds, wraps and prefolds, we have grown to love the brand even more! Where in the US are Thirsties produced?
Colorful Colorado. That is where we are from, as was the original founder. It also happens to be a very environmentally-friendly state and is centrally located in the country, thereby reducing our shipping times and costs for our domestic retail partners.

How did you get started in the cloth diapering industry?
About 2 years ago my father and I began looking for an environmentally-friendly business in an positively trending industry to acquire. We believe in rewarding the skills and talents of our fellow Americans; (b) we aim to reduce the distance our diapers travel from yarn to diaper, thus greatly reducing the carbon footprint of our manufacturing and distribution processes; (c) because we want to do our part to build domestic industry; (d) because we know that the only way to truly monitor quality – from raw goods to final product - is to build individual and mutually beneficial relationships with each and every one of our suppliers and sewers.

What is your favorite Thirsties product?
I love the Duo Diapers. They are so easy to use and reliable in any situation; daytime, nighttime, at home, or on the go. It is a two piece diaper system that has 5 layers of hemp/cotton blend and 2 layers of microfiber terry, seven thirsty absorbent layers in all. The ultra-soft microfleece liner on the inside protects baby’s skin from wetness and also resists staining. Q: It seems that many diapers close with snaps or velcro. I see a lot of names like aplix, touchtape...what are these?

A: There are many names for the hook and loop closure that we commonly call Velcro. Many people don't realize it, but Velcro is actually a brand name that we use as a common word. Kind of like the way we use the word 'band-aid' or 'kleenex'-both brands and not the generic name of the product. Similar to Velcro, many cloth diapering companies describe their closures as touchtape, Aplix or hook and loop. Each company uses the brand of closure it feels will hold up best over time. Someone familiar with these products may notice the difference between them. For most of us, they look almost the same and work the same.

How did you get started in the cloth diapering industry? By cloth diapering my own son.

Where in the US are Weehuggers produced?
We currently make our weehuggers diaper covers in Arkansas. Everything is shipped from the Blueberry Diapers headquarters in Knoxville, TN.

How did you get started in the cloth diapering industry?
My obsessive search for the perfect cloth diaper for my son caused many WAHMs pain and suffering as they created complicated off-pattern custom designs for my particular needs, so I decided to spare them the agony and just manufacture a new diaper myself!

Have you run into any challenges keeping diaper production in the US?
This is a big issue and I've been studying it very carefully because I've always believed in local sourcing and local production. But we've had lots of issues and challenges! I've learned that the US is a manufacturing powerhouse, but mainly for crazy high-end, high-value things like Boeing airplanes and complex machinery. Because American workers have high skills and multiple opportunities (though times are tough right now with the recession), they are able to demand higher wages, which makes it very hard to produce low-tech products like cloth diapers and textiles in the US and still sell them at a profit at prices our customers are willing to pay. If we could sell $40 cloth diapers, US manufacturing would be no sweat. But nobody would (or should) pay $40 for a diaper! That's the heart of the challenge. So most textile manufacturing and cut-and-sew facilities have moved to other countries where workers aren't as productive or skilled as the US and are willing (and desperate) to take on these lower cost projects.

People call this "outsourcing" and say that US companies are "shipping jobs overseas". But I'm learning that that's not always quite right. Right now, weehuggers are in over 60 retailers, most of which are small businesses in the USA. They love our products and can barely keep them in stock. The reason is because our domestic production can't keep up. The more weehuggers we can produce to meet demand, the more money these mom-and-pop retailers, our dear partners, can make. If, for example, we could increase our production by moving manufacturing overseas, it's very likely that our local manufacturer wouldn't need to fire a single employee, because they're over capacity as it is AND our retail partners could sell more weehuggers and grow their businesses. That seems like a win-win. It's a really tough issue right now, again, because so many Americans are out of work and so many people blame overseas production competition for it.

But we keep on keeping on. I've spent the past two years exploring domestic manufacturing to try and solve this problem because, again, I prefer local sourcing. Demand is high, which is a great problem to have, but frustrating when you know that there are parents out there that want weehuggers for their growing babies and sometimes have to wait. We're making progress, so I'll keep you posted as things develop.

What is your favorite Weehuggers product?
Do I have to pick just one? Each of the prints inspires me in different ways on different days. I'm fickle like that! Our bamboo inserts are so soft and absorbent... I'm crazy about bamboo as a sustainable textile, so maybe those are my favorite.

What can we expect to see next from Weehuggers?
Maybe a black and white print for the punk rock parents and their newborns who don't see in color yet. ;) Conversely, a wildly colorful print would be nice, too. Perhaps stripes or tie dye. I love new prints!

Anything else...
I love my "job". Babies and parents love cloth diapers and weehuggers has always been about making cloth diapers more accessible and fun to even more new parents. I think the Earth is thankful for our efforts too.

The Owls Have Landed

A couple of years ago, I didn't give owls much thought. I would never consider them "cute" or appropriate for baby attire. Then, somehow the diapering industry did it again. Cloth diapering made diapers cute for me and somehow it made owls cute as well. Across brands, owl prints have been all the rage. An animal that has been overlooked for years is now lends itself to some of the funkiest, trendiest, most sought-after prints in the diapering world. Here's a low-down on some of the owl products that Snooty Booty Diapers carries:

GroVia ow l print-although it's on a light blue background, this print is fairly gender neutral. It comes in all three of the GroVia diapers-newborn all in one, one size all in one and GroVia shell.

Weehuggers-I love the cream background and brown trim on these owl diapers. Weehugger owl prints are extremely hard to order and sell out quickly.

Swaddlebees-The print on the Swaddlebees Simplex is similar to the Weehuggers print. It's a little cuter than funky.

Sweet Pea-Sweet Pea offers the owl print on all its diapering and cover options as well as a wet bag.

Our first manufacturer spotlight is on Knickernappies. I loved these diapers even before I was a retailer. The custom fit were wonderful when my daughter was a newborn and we've enjoyed using the one size as well. Knickernappies offers a wide range of quality products, from sprayers to inserts to diaper pails. Here's a little more about them from owner Heather...

Where in the US are Knickernappies produced? All of our sewn products are made in Oregon. This includes all of our diapers, all inserts, nursing pads, pail liners, etc. Diaper Sprayers are assembled in Georgia.

How did you get started in the cloth diapering industry? Like most in the cloth diaper industry, I started because of my kids. My first child had chronic diaper rash from the day she was born. It took us 7 weeks to discover and try cloth diapers. Cloth solved her rash issue and we were hooked A year later, we bought Knickernappies. Our son has been in cloth from the beginning.

Have you run into any challenges keeping diaper production in the US? Yes. Producing in the US is often difficult, expensive, and now that many companies have taken their diaper production overseas, it's also hard to compete on price and innovation. But we're committed to making a quality product in the US. We know the people who sew our diapers personally. We are always looking for ways to produce our products more intelligently so we can always have our products made here.

What is your favorite Knickernappies product? I'm most proud of the LoopyDo. That was the answer to leaking issues we had with our daughter. We hadn't even purchased Knickernappies yet, so I was sewing inserts and selling them on a diapering forum that no longer exists. My first prototypes were hilarious. I wish now that I'd kept them...they would have been great in our "museum"!

What can we expect to see next from Knickernappies? We're working on several new ideas. Our prefolds just came out in May, so we're hoping to have a cover within the next several months. And years ago, we made wipes. They were so popular that we couldn't keep up with demand, so we discontinued them. We're hoping to bring those back soon.

Newborn Diapering Options Grow

Cloth diapering products follow certain trends. One size diapers, all in two systems, owls...when a craze hits one brand, many others follow suit. One size diapering certainly took the cloth diapering world by storm. Many parents, though, complain that one size diapers do not fit the newest babies. Recently, many companies have begun offering newborn diapers, or a smaller version of their one size diapers. Often they are designed to start fitting around 6 pounds and fit as long as 15 pounds. Here's a sampling of companies that have expanded to newborn size (or were ahead of the trend and always offered it):

Kissaluvs-A longtime newborn favorite, Kissa's size 0 fitteds feature a snap-down umbilical cutout and hug baby legs so well. They are great for holding in that newborn poo. Recently, Kissaluvs designed an all-in-one newborn diaper. It offers the great fit of the fitted with one piece convenience.

GroVia-GroVia's newborn diapers are so small and cute, it's impossible not to want a newborn to wear them. I think these diapers could almost make nighttime changes enjoyable...almost.

Bummis Newborn Pack-Bummis has always offered great newborn size diapers. They've combined their Super Brites with the newborn prefolds to create a create giftpack for a new baby.

Happy Heinys-In addition to a mini one-size that fits up to 15 pounds, Happy Heinys has micro sizes for preemie babies as small as 3 pounds.

Softbums-This is technically a one-size diaper, but the cover gets so small that there's no problem using this on a newborn. The newborn package offers 24 mini pods rather than full size. Once baby outgrows the mini pods, they make great doublers. With the covers adjusting to larger sizes, moving up to the dry touch pods is very affordable.

Since they are not worn as long as other sizes, newborn diapers tend to cost a little less than their one-size counterparts. This can help to make a short time period more affordable. The cuteness factor of these diapers is almost too much to resist. Even if you think you can get by with prefolds and covers or one size diapers, it's nice to have a couple of true newborn diapers in your stash as well.

Even before I knew much about cloth diapering, I'd always heard that Kissaluvs fitteds were the gold standard for worry-free newborn diapering. The umbilical snap down, the snap configuration and the leg elastic are important design features that make this a great fitting newborn diaper.

Many others run small and wouldn't be able to recommend them for larger babies. They are easy to stuff and offer cross-over snaps-something many other snapping diapers miss. This makes it easier to get a good fit on newborn and small-waisted babies.

The feature I love most is the option for the hemp insert. The diapers come with a snap-down one size microfiber insert AND the choice of a hemp/cotton insert. Most other one size diapers come with 2 microfiber inserts, but the hemp does a lot to add absorbency while maintaining a trimmer fit.

Priced at $15.95, Sweet Pea is a more economical option for diapering and a great price at 18.95 for a hemp option. I'm always cautious when adding lines made overseas. Some very popular economical options state "our workers are happy" with little to back up the statements. When pressed for more information, the companies stopped responding to my e-mails. Sweet Pea Diapers was very forthcoming in my requests and concerns. That makes me more confident in carrying the brand.

New babies are so exciting! I love the fresh feeling of hope with each new friend or family member who announces the good news of a new baby. I also love to pick out a special gift to help celebrate the baby's arrival. After a while, however, gifts blend together. It's hard to find something useful but different, something that won't collect dust on a shelf or get lost in a drawer.

That's why I love the "b" blanket from Rain or Shine Kids. This versatile blanket works well as a carrier blanket, nursing cover, stroller blanket and more. It's polar fleece on one side and nylon on the other. The combination of fabrics helps to make the blanket warm and water resistant. Short ties allow the blanket to tie to the straps of a baby carrier or stroller. I've used this blanket while wearing my daughter in a hip carrier to keep her warm. It's also great when it's raining. I can throw it around my neck to keep her dry. Recently we were at the park and the benches were a little damp. I grabbed the "b" blanket out of my car to keep our bottoms dry.

While the blanket is an ample size up to toddler-hood, it's not bulky. I really like it because it's useful for parents regardless of their crunchy-factor. FAQ: What's the point of a fitted?

Q: I'm having trouble understanding the point of a fitted diaper. They need a cover like prefolds, but they are more expensive. You don't get the cost savings and it's not a one-step diaper like a pocket or all in one. Why do people use them?

A: When I first started cloth diapering, I didn't really get the point of a fitted either. There didn't seem to be much cost savings over a pocket diaper. Plus, a fitted/cover is a two step process. I originally bypassed fitteds for pockets and all in ones for this reason.

As time went on and the cloth diapering addiction bug fully set in, I moved on to trying prefolds and fitteds. I found that each kind of diapering system has its own advantages. Based on what features you're looking for, fitteds can actually be pretty great.

Great leak protection-Since a fitted diaper has its own elastic and closure, with a cover it can provide more leak protection than a prefold can. This is especially important if your newborn has explosive bowel movements (most do). Two layers of elastic can be harder to leak through than one.

Good nighttime diaper-Fitteds are very absorbent and it's easy to lay in a doubler for even more leak protection. Unlike a pocket, the absorbency of a fitted reaches around the sides of the baby. This can be good for side sleepers. Again, the cover on top gives another layer of leak protection.

Great under wool and fleece-Pairing fitteds with wool is a great all-natural fiber choice. Fitteds can be easier to use under wool since you don't have to worry about a Snappi snagging the knit. I love using fitteds under fleece pants in the winter. My daughter's bottom gets a healthy amount of air circulation and she still stays warm.

Good breathability-Many parents like to use fitteds alone to allow their child's skin gets maximum breathability. While you'd need to be more vigilant than using them with a cover, fitteds are absorbent enough that you shouldn't get puddles. Even with a wool or fleece cover, fitted allow for good circulation. This can be essential for sensitive skin that's prone to diaper rash.

Of course, you don't need a special reason to use fitteds. They may just be the preferred diapering system for your family. If you're not using fitteds, maybe one of the above reasons is enough to give them a try.

Starting with a Partial Stash Part II

In Starting with a Partial Stash Part I, I explored the cost of the different diapering options available today. It seemed that no matter what kind of cloth diaper you choose, you can save over using disposable diapers. Now, what if you just can't swing the money for the start up stash? Here's how you can make cloth diapering a reality on a tight budget.

For expecting moms, your solution may be a little simpler. I recommend that expecting parents put aside $30-50 a month away until the baby comes. That's how much they'd need for disposables each month. Even with 5-6 months of saving, they have enough for a decent stash of whatever kind of diaper they want to use. If they keep putting aside that money for a few months after the baby is born, they can build a final set or size up without feeling a big pinch.

It's easy to register for cloth diapers through a baby registry. Snooty Booty Diapers even offers a completion certificate to help you buy what wasn't purchased!

Now for those past the baby registry and really wanting to start with cloth, you can still do it. I'm going to list several options and how how many months you'd need until you can switch over. For these calculations, I'm going to go with the retail prices I found with disposables and cloth, since they are the only stable prices to work with. Tax is also not included. Accessories like wet bags, wipes, etc. would be added at your discretion. This is for diapers only. If you find better deals, then you'll be able to switch over more quickly.

Option 1: Prefolds

Cost: $60

$50 Econobum starter kit (12 changes)

$10 Huggies 35 count

With this option, you'd have enough to diaper fully during the day and could wash each night while using 1 disposable each night. If you have an older child that needs 6-8 diapers a day, you'd actually be able to wash every day and a half to two days. It would be possible to bypass the dipsosables altogether.

If you decided you loved the prefolds, you could buy another dozen prefolds, a few more covers and you'd be set. The switch over would take 1 month! If you decided that you wanted to mix in other kinds of diapers, here's the breakdown of time (assuming that you put the $50 disposable diaper money into more cloth diapers each month):

all in two: 4 months for 18 all in two changes, 6 months for 24 all in two changes, 1-3 months if you keep using your prefolds

one size/pocket/all in one: 6 months for 18 changes, 8 months for 24 changes, 2-4 months if you keep using your prefolds

If you're using sized diapers, keep putting aside the money each month so it's there when it's time to size up.

As you see, it's easy to move to full diapering after 1 month. You would need to wash more often than if you started with 24 diapers, but it's not impossible. After 8 months maximum, you could be fully diapering with the stash of your choice. In many cases, it would be much shorter.

What if you really can't handle prefolds (they are easy!) and need something more streamlined?

Here's another scenario. It's a little more expensive and will take more time, but here it is:

Total: $90

$20 for 72 Huggies

$70 for 6 all in two changes

If you use 2 disposables a day (1 during naptime, 1 at night), then you could use the 6 all in two changes throughout the day. This would work with an older child that uses 6-8 total diapers a day. You'd need to do wash each day. After that, you could slowly mix in other kinds of diapers.

It's clear that the best way to start is to get the most changes for your dollar. It means mixing in other kinds you'd prefer as you go along, but after a month or so, your dependency on disposables and prefolds would decrease.

Cloth diapering is a huge money-saver for many families. Just about any cloth diaper can save money over disposables. Spending $50 a month on disposables costs about $1500 over 2 1/2 years. That's calculated on using 8 diapers a day that cost about 20 cents each. The numbers change if your diapers are a little cheaper or a little more expensive. A younger child can easily go through more diapers, while an older child may get by on 6 a day. Once you have another child, the costs start all over again.

Cloth is more upfront, but over the long haul, saves money. Here's the average cost of different kinds of cloth diapers (based on buying 24 per child/size):

This is a very rough estimate. You may spend more or less depending on the number of each style you buy and how long the diapers last. The chart includes a median price of many brands. While the selection is more limited, there are some discount brands that can cost about 30% less.

For longevity, you can expect diapers like prefolds to be a little more durable. Sized diapers will also last through more children than one-size diapers, since they are used for a shorter period of time with each child. When using sized diapers, some children will never outgrow mediums and will only need 2 sizes. All these factors make it difficult to say exactly how much you'd spend. It's clear, though, that the upper limit on these items is about $1500, the same as what you'd spend on disposables for one child.

So, now that you know the cost, what do you do if you don't have it? Part II will focus on moving to full cloth diapering with a partial stash.

FAQ: What do I use with wool?

Q: I am having some longies made for me out of wool... I currently have been using cloth diapers but when using wool I am not sure where to start. What kind of insert do I use or do I have to use a pre-fold? I love the look and the idea but I do not want them to be bulky... what is my least bulky but will work method with wool. Any help would be great! I really want to use them this winter.

A: Since wool acts as a waterproof cover (be sure to lanolize!), it's great for use over fitteds and prefolds. Some people use them as an added layer over all in ones or pocket diapers overnight. During the day, though, wool over a waterproof diaper is probaby overkill.

Inserts-Wool doesn't have a place to hold an insert, so this would not be your best option. Fabrics like microfiber (a common insert fabric) shouldn't touch the skin anyway. Likewise, trifolding a prefold would be tricky, since it can easily shift without the leg elastic that a wrap-style cover provides.

Fitteds are wonderful under wool. A trim fitted like Tiny Tush One Size hemp would work well. If the fitted is trim, your wool/diaper combo will be as well.

Prefolds are also great under wool. You just need to be sure to use pins or a Snappi to hold it in place. If you decide to use a Snappi, be sure to pull the wool over it carefully when taking it on and off. Otherwise, you could end up snagging your lovely knitted wool.

Whatever you decide, wool is great for breathability and longevity. Unlike PUL covers, you can use a wool cover many times, washing about once a week.

Bottombumpers One Size Diaper

Bottombumpers was one of the last brands to offer sized-only diapers, so I knew it was only a matter of time until they developed a one-size diaper. I wondered though, if a one size version would stay true to the trim-fitting design of their sized diapers. One of the brand's great features is the trim fit. It's really hard to keep a trim fit in a one-size while providing enough coverage for larger babies on larger settings.

Would it keep a great fit? And what about the adjustment? For a while, Bottombumpers kept it hush-hush. Retailers knew it wasn't a snap-down rise, but it wasn't adjustable elastic. It was hard to think of what the adjustment might be.

A couple of months ago, retailers were allowed to purchase a one-size sample to try out. I was very excited to receive the one-size diaper...until I opened the package. When I took it out, I was sure that Bottombumpers had sent me a sized diaper by accident. They looked exactly alike! To show how easy it is to confuse them, I lined up 3 diapers here. 2 are sized, and the yellow one is one size. It blends in so well!

After some poking around the diaper, I discovered that it was, in fact, a one size diaper. The adjustment is snap-down, but not on the rise. It's ingeniously hidden underneath the snap in soaker! Once the soaker is in place, it's impossible to see. The placement of the snaps allows the diaper to retain the great Bottombumpers trimness, but it's faster to adjust than leg elastic.

The size settings are color-coded, so you never have to worry about putting the diaper at 2 different settings. Brilliant!

Since the diaper accommodates 4 size settings, it's not quite as trim on the smaller settings at the sized Bottombumpers. It is less bulky than many other one size brands, thanks to the smooth, snap-less rise. The absorbency of the soakers is great, and the materials are the same that you are used to in the sized version. To help compare, the green diaper is the one-size on the second setting next to a medium size blue.

The verdict? I really like this diaper and was excited for its release. Since it's looking like we might have outgrown our medium Bottombumpers before my daughter potty-trains, I'm glad that I'll be able to move her easily to the next size setting on the one-size. It's trim enough that clothing fits easily over the diaper, and she does well with the absorbency. If you're really concerned about getting the trimmest fit, then you should still consider the sized diapers. Otherwise, the one-size is a great way to go!

Another all in two diaper has hit the market, for those of you that love this streamlined diaper concept. Sprout Change, from the maker of WillowPads and WillowSprout, takes a lot of the features found in your favorite all in two diapers and incorporates them into one great design. The newest version just debuted this Monday, and its updates are really great. Reaching the adjustment on the original version was somewhat difficult. It was really the only thing holding me back from loving this diaper. Fortunately, this has been fixed, so the diaper's great features shine through. Here are some highlights:
internal adjustment- The v2 has easily accessible internal leg and waist adjustment through an opening on the hip. Buttonhole elastic offers plenty of size options to get a great fit. I was able to take the guesswork out of adjusting and could actually move the elastic while it was on my daughter. Super easy!

reversisible cover- Sprout Change has some great new colors. If you're having trouble deciding, remember that each cover is reversible. One side is side-snapping-the fit on the other side is front snaps.

no-guess snaps-Snapping diapers are not difficult to use. Some people, though feel that velcro diaper are easier to put on since there's not fooling around with waist and leg snaps. For those uncomfortable with using snaps (which setting is right?), Sprout Change offers no-guess snaps. Instead of using multiple snaps to get a good fit, the internal elastic takes care of it. There are three snaps total on each side, so it's impossible to snap on the wrong setting.

organic hemp or stay-dry-Sprout Change has absorbent hemp folding inserts. You can use them alone or fold them into an insert sleeve. This makes it easy to add absorbency as necessary and keep diaper changes fast. Customers have the option of a natural sleeve or a stay-dry poly sleeve.

I really like that Sprout Change has some unique features while still staying true to a streamlined all in two system. It's familiar enough to make it simple to use, but has some design elements you won't find elsewhere. I enjoy this diaper and reversing the sides to match outfits. My one recommendation: if you find that the diaper is sagging, let out the rise and tighten the waist a bit. It will improve the fit incredibly!

Snooty Booty's Green Efforts

Last week I wrote about a few of the things my family does to "green" our home. I thought you might be interested in what Snooty Booty Diapers does to ensure that the business creates as little garbage as possible.

-Packaging: Fortunately, many cloth diaper companies package their products sparingly (or not at all). This helps to cut down on waste. Most of the packing is recyclable when it does reach your home. In most cases, belly bands and hang tags can go in with your paper recycling.

I try to use as little packaging as possible. For a long time, I really disliked using polymailers for packages. It seemed counterproductive. A few months ago, I was so happy to find EcoEnclose polymailers, which are compostable and biodegradable! Each bag also comes with 2 adhesive strips, so it can be used again.

For larger packages or fragile items, most of the packaging is reused. Any boxes strong enough for another use are used for large orders. Bubble wrap, packing paper, it's all saved as I get it. Hopefully you'll be able to use it again as well! For items that ship USPS Priority, I feel good knowing that their packaging is designed in an eco-friendly manner.

Whenever I have too many boxes lying around, I put them up on FreeCycle. It's never hard to find someone to use them for moving. Any boxes that can't make another safe trip are recycled.

Paper: In most cases, online invoices are all a customer needs for her records. Unless you request one, your package arrives without a printed receipt. I am always happy to send one if you need it down the road.

Almost all business is conducted on my computer. Besides shipping labels, I rarely print records for the store. Any old packing slips or unneeded mail is promptly recycled.

Green Companies: Whenever possible, I try to promote products of companies that I really feel go far in their carbon footprint reduction. Thirsties has solar panels on their warehouse to offset energy usage, and Knickernappies is a GenGreen certified business. Both of these businesses also are among the many great diaper companies that keep their production local.

In-store: For those that shop in my showroom, I bag purchases with recycled/recovered paper bags.

FAQ: Are Cloth Diapers Hotter Than Disposables?

Q: I'd like to try cloth diapers, but I'm worried that they will be too hot in the summer. Do babies sweat a lot in cloth diapers?

A: This is a common concern of many parents. Since they are naturally bulkier than disposables, cloth diapers just seem hotter. Add to the mix fabrics like wool and fleece, and it seems that cloth diapering should be a winter-only endeavor.

I have never measured the temperature of my daughters' bottoms in cloth or disposables. I can say that we have used cloth in all seasons, with temperatures ranging from below zero to over 100, with no adverse effects. I absolutely understand why it seems like cloth is hotter, but I don't think it really is. Here's a rundown of my thoughts. Keep in mind they are not supported by any actual temperature data or hard scientific facts/data gathering on my part.

-Cloth diapers seem hotter because the baby's skin may not be dry. If you're using natural fabrics, there's nothing to wick away moisture. Since the skin is damp, it may seem like your baby is sweating.

-Stay-dry fabrics like microfleece do a good job of wicking away moisture. While it's bulkier (depending on the diaper used), the fabrics of a cloth diaper are probably more breathable than a disposable. Remember, disposables are made primarily of plastic, absorbent gel and wood pulp. That doesn't seem especially breathable to me. Since the gel in disposables are incredibly efficient at absorbing, the skin is very dry. That doesn't mean your baby isn't sweating. It could just be that the sweat is immediately pulled away into the gel.

-Fabrics like wool are good at trapping heat when it's cold and releasing heat when it's not. Many people successfully use wool during the summer with no problem. I have joked that sheep wear wool all year round and they are usually fine :)

Anytime it's incredibly hot and humid, go with what makes sense. Dress your child comfortably and in as few layers as possible. One definite benefit of cloth diapers is that they are cute enough to wear alone. You don't need to hide them under pants. Pair with a cute top and go!

How else do you keep your home and family green?

Cloth diapering isn't the only "green" part of many families. Instead, it's part of an overall picture and lifestyle. Over time, I've taken small steps to reduce the amount of garbage that my family generates. An upside is that it's often saved us money as well!

This is the general order we've taken:

recycling

reducing energy consumption

reusable napkins and cleaning cloths

cloth diapers

green cleaning products

reusable menstrual products

fuel-efficient cars

growing our own vegetables

I'm also constantly on the lookout for healthful foods and organic groceries. This is difficult, as I do love my sweets! As the opportunities have arisen, we've changed our appliances to more efficient models. We FreeCycle and donate items we no longer need. When we find a way to use a reusable version of something, we do.

I say "we" and hope that my children learn to be environmentally conscious by example. We're not perfect and still have tons of room to grow. Next on my list-and this has been there for a while-is composting. Any tips would be appreciated.

FAQ: What's the difference between microfleece and microfiber?

Q: I'm a little confused. Most things I've read say that it's not good for microfiber to touch the baby's skin. But then pocket diaper descriptions say they have a layer of microfleece. Are these two different? What's so bad about microfiber?

A: When people start cloth diapering, there is so much terminology to explain. It would absolutely be easier if the names microfleece and microfiber weren't so close. Microfleece is often used in the lining of pocket diapers. It's a "stay-dry" fabric, meaning that urine and wetness pass through and the smooth fabric itself retains a fairly dry feeling. Microfiber, on the other hand, is very absorbent and feels like terry. Little loops like terry increase surface area and absorbency.

Why shouldn't microfiber go against the skin? It's too absorbent. This is great for a diaper insert, but not so great against the skin. If there's no urine to catch, it begins wicking away moisture from the skin. After a short time, the skin can become chapped and irritated.

Since microfleece is not absorbent, it doesn't continually drain the skin of moisture. It will allow liquids to pass through, however, making it a good choice for a stay-dry pocket diaper.

Fleece Diaper Liners Have Many Uses!

A customer recently sent me an e-mail interested in fleece liners, but wanted to know "exactly what they are for." She was trying to compile a list of diapering necessities. I recommending fleece liners quite often, but was still surprised when I compiled the list of all the reasons people use them.

~A stay dry liner
Prefolds are inexpensive, easy to clean, absorbent and durable. The downside? They hold wetness against the skin, which can irritate some babies. Fleece liners help to create a stay-dry barrier between baby's bottom and the prefold.

~Easy clean-up
For babies with sticky or messy bowel movements, fleece liners make clean-up easier. Whether dunking in the toilet or rinsing with a diaper sprayer, dealing with a small liner can be easier than grappling with a larger diaper.

~Diaper cream barrier
Some parents prefer to use diaper creams or need to apply medications that are not completely safe for cloth diapers. A fleece liner helps protect the diaper while allowing parents to apply cream to bottoms.

~Stain free diapers
For parents that prefer to keep the insides of their diapers pristine, a liner helps to prevent most solids from reaching the inner pocket.

~An inexpensive test
I recently had a customer whose baby had sensitive skin. She wanted to use pocket diapers, but was worried that the fleece inners may irritate her child. Instead of investing in some diapers, she bought a few fleece liners and laid them in her disposable diapers. Once she knew that the fleece wouldn't irritate the baby's skin, she was able to purchase a set of pocket diapers without worry!

So, are fleece liners a necessity? Not 'necessarily'. Many cloth diapering families get by fine without them. They are certainly useful, however. Since they are also inexpensive, it can be a good idea to have a couple around in case you need them.

bumGenius 3.0 vs. bumGenius 4.0

Many parents love bumGenius diapers and the 3.0 pocket was a big seller at Snooty Booty Diapers. For this reason, many parents were surprised when Cottonbabies announced they were discontinuing the 3.0 pocket. Fears were alleviated the next week when the improved 4.0 version was announced. The restyled diaper address some concerns parents had with the 3.0, namely the upper weight limit, elastic and closure/laundry tabs.

So, is the bumGenius 4.0 really better? Will bumGenius be able to retain its great reputation, or even make it better? Here's a rundown of the 4.0. In pictures, the moonbeam is the 3.0 and the grasshopper is the 4.0 snap version. Both diapers were washed 2-3 times and worn 2-3 times each:

Sizing-The 4.0 definitely has a longer rise than the 3.0. This side-by-side picture shows the difference. The longer rise is more comparable to a lot of other one-size diapers out there and will hopefully remedy many babies outgrowing the diaper before potty-training. It's also possible to see that the waist is a little larger as well.

bumGenius compared the fit of the 4.0 to the Flip. I was a little worried about this, since Flip fits larger than the 3.0 or Elemental. We were comfortably able to start using the 3.0 on my daughter in-between 9-10 lbs. She moved to the middle snap setting at around 15 lbs. With the Flip, we could actually use the smallest setting at around 18 lbs. max. Similar sizing could spell trouble using these on a newborn.

In comparing the two versions, however, it seems that the smallest size setting is about the same. The leg holes of the 4.0 even seem a touch smaller. While the upper limit is extended, I would think the lower limit to be about the same. I don't have a newborn to test it on, and would love for someone to chime in on this.

Hook and loop: The hook and loop does seem grippier than the older version. The loop of the loop is bigger (hope that makes sense). Instead of using fabric laundry tabs, the tab is made of the same loop material as the front of the diaper. Hopefully this will help those who found the tabs to become less sticky over time. Parents that want to avoid that altogether can choose the snap version.

Elastic: Since the diaper is so new, it's hard to tell how well the elastic will perform over time. If it does need replacing, the elastic is now more easily accessible.

3 new colors have also been added. They are even more pastel than the original pastel colors. Noodle is a pale yellow, almost a dark cream. Bubble is a light lavender and sweet is almost a mint green.

So, will you love the 4.0? It really comes down to what you need in a diaper. If you really liked the 3.0 and your concerns were addressed, then the 4.0 could be a great diaper for you. I don't think there will be many people who are able to use the 3.0 and not the 4.0. If you weren't crazy about the fit, didn't like suedecloth, don't love pocket diapers in general...then the 4.0 is still not going to be a good "fit" for you (hee, hee).

I'll post some comparison fit shots as soon as I have a cooperating model. Feel free to share yours!

Cloth for the Coast

For the past two months, it's been impossible to escape the terrible images and news coming from the Gulf Coast. Unlike earthquakes or hurricanes that produce only minutes or hours of devastation, the oil leak has been constant. This seemingly endless stream of oil has made many feel helpless. Behind the first waves of oil-slicked birds and clogged beaches, we can only expect more. How can anyone make a difference?

Tereson from FuzziBunz lives in Louisiana and has seen the onslaught of the spill firsthand. Realizing that the absorbent inserts and prefolds we are all familiar with could help affected wildlife, she came up with the idea of Cloth for the Coast. Working with local organizations, FuzziBunz is collecting diapering items that can help to clean oil off of wildlife.

Many of you may have seen the TODAY show segment about the new "designer" diapers from Pampers. In an attempt to make disposables more appealing, Pampers is teaming up with designer Cynthia Rowley to feature limited edition prints. My feeling is that if you want a diaper to be cute AND functional AND save money, then go with cloth! My hope is that many parents, in wanting their babies' bottoms to be cute and comfortable, will actually take a closer look at cloth.

Jenn from Cottonbabies is thinking along those lines as well. She's organized cloth diapering families to stand outside the TODAY show tomorrow, July 8th to promote cloth. All-in-Two Diapers-Are they for You?

New cloth diapering products seem to follow trends. A year or so ago, one-size was "it." Many brands released a one-size version into their line, or are currently testing a one-size version. Now, it seems that each brand is developing their own all-in-two version. When I first started diapering, very few diapers were all-in-twos. Now, they are commonplace. What's the idea behind an all-in-two?

Customers really seem to like the all-in-two idea. The style combines the ease of an all-in-one diaper with the cost-saving aspects of prefolds and covers. Instead of changing the entire diaper for each change, only the soaker is replaced. Since a soaker is less expensive than an entire pocket or all-in-one, using 2-3 soakers per cover, or shell, makes the system less expensive.

Some discerning customers look at an all-in-two, particularly something like Flip organic and say, "How is that different than a prefold and cover?" In many ways, it's not. Trifolding a prefold and laying in a cover is the original all-in-two system! Many all-in-two systems are a little fancier than prefolds, with stay-dry or snap-in soakers. This can make them a little friendlier to parents who are intimidated by prefolds.

If all-in-twos are cost-effective, easy to use, and take up less space, why go with anything else? As with any diaper style, it can have downsides. Babies with very messy may not get full use out of each cover, and some parents like a completely fresh diaper with each change. For day cares, some state regulations require a complete change with no reusing part of the diaper. As with anything, lifestyle and preference reign supreme.

Want to try and all-in-two, but aren't sure which one is for you? Here's a quick summary of the offerings at Snooty Booty Diapers:

GroVia has a TPU outer with athletic wicking material inner. The soaker is organic cotton and snaps in the front and back. A booster can be laid on top or tucked into the soaker layers.

Q: How do I know if my diapers are repelling?

A: It's a term that pocket and AIO diaper users fear: repelling diapers. Repelling is a never a good word when combined with 'diaper'. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to tell if your diapers are repelling or leaking. Here are some things to consider:

Is the diaper dry when you notice the leaking? If the soaker or insert is very dry, there's a good chance that the diaper is repelling, rather than absorbing, urine.

How is the fit of the diaper? If the diaper is gapping at the legs or waist, or if the diaper seems too big/roomy (like with a newborn), the diaper may simply be leaking rather than repelling.

Is the diaper soaked when it leaks? If it's a very wet diaper, it's not repelling. You may need to add absorbency or change more often.

What causes repelling?

~Using the wrong detergent

~Detergent build-up

~Using an incorrect diaper ointment

How can you stop repelling?

~Doing a very hot wash with several rinses

~Using a SMALL amount of Dawn. Sometimes scrubbing the inside of the diaper is necessary.

The best way to tell if your diapers are no longer repelling is to use them. Putting some water on top to see if it absorbs is not really accurate. Most diapers need the compression of a baby bottom to absorb effectively. Natural fibers, like cotton, hemp or bamboo will absorb with this test, but they are less likely to repel in the first place.

The Addictive Nature of Cloth Diapering

Back when I first started researching cloth diapers, I came across one site that warned, "There is an addictive component to cloth diapering. Beware!" At the time, I thought this comment was a little, well...weird. What could possibly so exciting about a diaper? Over three years later, I know better. I've witnessed people stalking diaper brands for new stockings (maybe I've been one of those stalkers), gasped stashes of several hundred diapers and have seen parents selling used diapers for more than they cost new (again with those stalked brands). I'm now the one that gets strange looks when I try to explain that there's just something about cloth diapering that makes it addictive. In trying to explain the WHY of it, though, I fail.

I have seen parents focus on other baby products in a similar way. Some love Gymboree clothing and take great pride in amassing the collections and later selling them. Used Gymboree clothing seems to sell well. Some have a large collection of carriers and slings. It's kind of hard to explain why those would be addictive, too.

Is it the cuteness? The need to try different brands and fits? The "gotta have it" new colors and prints? I'm not sure. I just know that I don't often see parents taking pictures of a baby's stash of shoes or jackets. There may be forums dedicated to baby socks or blankets, but I've never found any. Blankets are cute. I still haven't found a great pair of baby socks. Yet there's no addiction there for me.

So, can you put it into words? What makes cloth diapering so addicitive?

Someday I will come up with a million-dollar idea. Until then, other people are inventing products I should have thought of. Q: I received my diapers and the directions recommend washing 6-8 times before using! Is this really necessary?

A: I get this question a lot. Whether people are anxious to use the new diapers, really need to use them right away or just unhappy about using all the energy on unsoiled diapers, it can be tempting to skip the prep washings. Here's a guide for what needs a lot of washes and what doesn't:

Pocket diapers and covers-Washing once before use is fine. Washing is mainly to make sure that the diaper is free of any dust or grime from the manufacturing and shipping process. It's always a good idea to toss them into the dryer on low heat before using the first time, in case some of the holes created during sewing aren't completely closed up. Washing is mainly to make sure that the diaper is free of any dust or grime from the manufacturing and shipping process.

Microfiber inserts-Just as with pockets and covers, you should be fine using microfiber inserts after 1-2 washes.

All in one and all in two diapers-Depending on the insert, these diapers may take several washes to be come fully absorbent. Microfiber soakers only need 1-2 washes while natural-fiber soakers need 3-4 to use and 6-8 for full absorbency.

Prefolds and natural fibers inserts- You can probably get away with using these after 3-4 washes, but you may find that your diapers aren't fully absorbent until about 6-8 washes.

Why the need to wash natural fibers so many times? 6-8 washes is not to get the diapers clean, but to plump up the fibers for maximum absorption. As you wash and dry natural fibers, they stop laying so smooth and flat. As they are agitated, the fibers plump up and the surface area increases. The more surface area, the better absorbency you'll get. It's also important to wash natural fibers to remove the natural oils from the diapers. For this reason it's important to wash natural fibers separately from stay-dry inners the first few times.

After the first wash, it's unnecessary to use detergent in the prepping process. If you have a large amount of diapers, put them all through together. Otherwise, it's fine to prep a couple of diapers with your regular laundry. Don't forget the dryer! Natural fibers really need the tumbling in the dryer. Again, if you don't have a lot to prep, stick them in with your regular laundry.

Most of the time people send their business information for me to spotlight. Other times, I ask to write about great businesses. I happened upon Flying Fingers this past Saturday at a MayFair event and knew it was the perfect business to spotlight here!

Flying Fingers is a family owned and operated yarn shop. Elise, the owner had been knitting for many years and has passed the talent onto her children. When I visited their booth at the event, both Elise and her son Dillon were knitting away-flying fingers indeed! Every time I looked their way throughout the day, there were needles flying. They never seemed to stop!

In person, their knitted wares are even prettier than they are online. Elise was familiar with using wool soakers as cloth diaper covers. They most often recommend Brown Sheep's Nature Spun for knitting soakers.

I'm always amazed at the creativity a t-shirt inspires and even happier when I find a talented mom in my home state! Ruby Ryder Attire and Gifts is run by Kim, a fellow New Jersey mom. She crafts appliqued garments, hair bows, tutus and more.

Product Focus: Thirsties Duo Insert

Over the past year, Thirsties has been adding many great products to their Duo Line. First came the Duo Wraps, then the Duo Diaper. Snaps in the wraps, prints in both. What could make this line better? Inserts!

Another diapering system is joining the all-in-two love. Thirsties recently introduced the Duo prefold and the Duo insert. The Duo prefold is a trim one size hemp prefold. The Duo insert is 2 snap together pieces, similar to the Duo Diaper insert. The top layer is a fleece-topped microfiber and the bottom layer is hemp. Both inserts are designed for great absorbency, quick drying time, and a trim fit.

Confused about all the Duo options? Here's a rundown:

Product Focus: Mommy's Touch Budget Bottoms

Love all-in-two diapers? Here's a new one for you! The latest product from Mommy's Touch, Budget Bottoms, combines the fit of its traditional pocket and all-in-one diapers with the cost-saving benefits of an all-in-two diaper. Despite the name, however, the materials and workmanship are the same quality you have come to expect in the Mommy's Touch line.

The cover, or shell, of the system has the same fit and size adjustment mechanism of the other Mommy's Touch Diapers. The sandwich PUL means that nothing plasticy is against the skin, but it's still possible to wipe or rinse the shell between changes. Mommy's Touch diapers have great coverage, so it's easy to fit chunky tummies, bottoms and thighs.

The inserts are microfiber topped with microfleece. A hemp version is coming soon for those that prefer natural insert fibers. The insert is actually two pieces-the main insert and an additional soaker/booster. I like this because it's easy to fit the inserts in the diaper no matter what setting you are using. You don't have to worry about folding it down, trying not to shift it, etc. Both pieces snap into the shell. Depending on the size setting you are using, it's possible to snap the booster onto the main insert or onto the shell itself. That way you get full coverage and maximum asborbency at each size.

Like other Mommy's Touch diapers, the Budget Bottoms fit a little larger than some other one-size diapers. I wouldn't really recommend them for newborns, but would advise parents to go with the newborn sized Budget Bottoms. The newborn size fits up to about 12 pounds. By that weight, the regular Budget Bottoms should fit well.

I was fortunate to get a chance to test the Budget Bottoms during the development phase this past fall. I was happy with the absorbency and fit of the diapers, and had no problem getting a few changes per shell. With very messy bowel movements, you may find that you need to wash the shell instead of reusing. I didn't notice that this happened any more than with other all-in-two systems.

Even with purchasing both the newborn and one size sets, the cost for this system is less than $400. That's a great deal for diapers from birth to potty-training! The quality is good, despite the name, so it's a definite consideration for those looking for an all-in-two system.

T-shirts are a staple in my household. Especially in the summer, they are easy to throw on over a bathing suit, they are cool and comfy and easy to match with jeans or solid-colored shorts (or a cute diaper :). Product Review: Bummis Easy Fit

Bummis products are really awesome-their Super Whisper Wraps are workhorse covers for us. With organic prefolds, biosoft liners and more, they really do offer a complete diapering solution. When they announced the arrival of the Easy Fit a few months ago, I knew that it would probably be a great diaper as well.

The Easy Fit is made in Scotland by TotsBots (they also make the Bamboozle fitteds). Not a simple pocket, not an all-in-one, this diaper is a a stuffed pocket diaper. What does that mean? The soaker is attached to the diaper. Before you start grumbling about drying time, know that that soaker stuffs into the pocket (reminds me of a tongue) and agitates out in the wash, but remains connected as one piece. Since the soaker is microfiber on the bottom and bamboo on top, it doesn't take forever to dry. Unlike an all-in-one, it's easy to customize the absorbency with extra room with in the pocket.

I really liked the fit on my daughter. I used the middle snap setting, and the fit wasn't really bulky. I used it a few times without any added absorbency. It leaked the first couple of times, and I worried that it might not be absorbent enough on its own. A few more washes told me that this is a diaper that really needs a lot of prepping. As it gained absorbency, the leaks stopped. Washing was really easy-I just tossed it in, and the soaker agitated out of the pocket. I hung the whole thing on the drying rack overnight, and in the morning the diaper was completely dry. This is good news for those that like to keep their diapers out of the dryer.

Since some one-size diapers don't fit small babies well, the Easy Fit has a TiniFit version that fits from 5-12 pounds. This is a good option if you are expecting a small baby or an unexpected preemie.

I love the colors offered in the EasyFit-blueberry, lemon, orange, lime, lemon and pomegranate (white as well). Yummy names fora yummy diaper! The one thing I'd like to see on this diaper are crossover tabs on both sides. It's just nice to have it on both, and I feel the tabs hold up better with the extra reinforcement. Overall though, a well-fitting diaper that's easy to use!

Business Spotlight: Define*Me Clothing Company

When I try to describe the cloth diapering industry to others, they are always surprised to learn that most cloth diaper companies were started by moms and are owned/operated by them still. Many of them started sewing for their own children and it grew from there.

Define*Me Clothing Company's beginnings remind me of that as well. Jennifer, the owner, loved personalized clothing for her own children, but wanted a better selection than what was currently on the market. FAQ Friday: Why not All-in-Ones all the time?

Q: I'm interested in cloth diapering and have read about the different kinds. I wonder why people don't just use all-in-ones? They seem the easiest. Is it just the cost, or are there better kinds out there?

A: I recently received that question from a customer trying to decide what to buy. I think it's a common sentiment from parents looking to switch to cloth. In the beginning, I myself looked closely at all-in-one diapers before settling on mostly pocket diapers.

As a one-piece, very-like-a-disposable diaper, all-in-ones are attractive for parents looking for the ease of a disposable and the reusability of cloth. They are easy for caregivers and require little explanation.

On the downside, lots of sewn-in layers mean longer drying times. Some, like Mommy's Touch, are designed with flap-like soakers, but they still dry faster in the dryer. Those looking to preserve elastic or hang-dry may not prefer the all-in-one design. Bottombumpers soakers snap out, so this is a nice compromise.

It's harder to customize the absorbency on some styles. bumGenius and Drybees have pockets to add absorbency, and it's possible to slip a doubler in the layers of the Bottombumpers soaker. Otherwise, it's necessary to lay a doubler on top.

All-in-ones also tend to be more expensive, which can deter parents interested in cost savings. Overall, I recommend all-in-one diapers as a part of a stash rather than the whole thing. I do have a few customers that use them exclusively, but for most the advantages of other styles make a combination the best way to go.

Product Review: Tiny Tush One Size Hemp Fitted Diapers

I love one size diapers for the ease and convenience of buying one size and being done with it. When I had 2 children in cloth, one size meant less bulk in the diaper bag and easier changes. There are some downsides to one size, though and bulk is one of the them. One size fitteds especially tend to be fairly bulky.

That's why I was excited when Tiny Tush came out with a one size hemp fitted diaper. Tiny Tush has great cotton and organic cotton versions of their one size fitted, but the hemp version offers a trim fit and even greater absorbency. This is an unbeatable combination for naps and nighttime!

Tiny Tush's hemp fitted diaper offers an easy-snap down front to quickly change sizes. Since the hemp fabric is trim, it's not a bulky front. My daughter is using the second largest setting at about 23 pounds and has plenty of room to grow. I like that Tiny Tush diapers have 4 size settings for greater adjustability. There's a better chance that the diaper will reach its full weight potential.

In order to give even better customization, the diaper has a snap-in soaker. It not only makes this diaper dry faster, but the soaker can be used as a contour diaper on its own (for small newborns). Being far past the newborn stage, I couldn't attempt this on my daughter. Someone will need to let me know how it works out!

How is the fit? I like that there are crossover snaps to really fit small waists well. If you need the diaper to fit more trimly, you can take out the soaker and the diaper will still have plenty of absorbency. On the flip side, if you need to add a doubler, the diaper is trim enough that it won't be super bulky. Look at this great fit under jeans!

I tried this diaper during the day and for some long naps. It really held up well and we never reached saturation point. Depending on how heavy a wetter your child is, you can use this at night on its own or with some added absorbency. You won't have a lot of bulk, though. For fun, I tried it under a small Thirsties cover (at 23 lbs., my daughter really has no business wearing this anymore). It fit!

It's rare to find a really absorbent one size diaper that fits trimly and doesn't take forever to dry. I'm so glad that I found it in the hemp Tiny Tush. My one nit-picking comment would be that I didn't like how the front of the diaper curled forward a little bit. Since it's a fitted under a cover, it's not a huge deal. But, since I noticed it, I feel the need to mention it. It's not enough of a reason to keep my from recommending it, and it may not happen with every diaper. If you're looking for a trim, absorbent one size fitted and are considering this diaper, go for it!
